Basic Canadian Citizenship eligibility depends on the individual applicant. Factors assessed include:

  • STATUS – must have valid status as Permanent Resident
  • AGE – must be over 18 years of age (<18 requires a parent or guardian to apply)
  • PHYSICAL PRESENCE – must have lived in Canada for 3 of the last 5 years immediately prior to the application
  • TAXES – must have met income tax filing obligations, filing taxes in 3 of the last 5 years (minimum; if required)
  • LANGUAGE – if 18 to 54 years old, must provide proof of English or French ability and knowledge of Canada

You may NOT be eligible for Canadian Citizenship if:

  • you have unfulfilled conditions related to your Permanent Residence status in Canada;
  • are under review for immigration or fraud reasons;
  • are under a removal order; or
  • you have committed certain crimes.

The current processing time for Canadian Citizenship applications is approximately 12 months.
