What is an LMIA?

An LMIA is a document issued by the Government of Canada, approving a Canadian employer to hire one or multiple temporary foreign workers (TFW).

Canadian employers need an LMIA if they want to hire a temporary foreign worker (TFW). There are very few exceptions to this rule.

Types of LMIA

Canadian employers are only approved to hire a foreign worker to fill a vacant position if they make a genuine effort to fill the position with a permanent resident or Canadian citizen first.

There are many streams within the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Requirements for the programs and LMIA process vary according to the individual stream.

Streams include:

  • High-Wage Stream
  • Low-Wage Stream
  • Agricultural Stream
  • Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP)
  • Dual Intent LMIA
  • Permanent Residency Stream
  • Live-in Caregivers (inside Canada)
